Basically tells the story so far from a different point of view. If I had known that, I wouldn't have bothered with it. It was a pretty good read, but too repetitive to be great.

Renegades of Pern, published in 1989, starts a decade before the events of Dragonflight and covers the time up to Dragondrums fairly quickly. We get glimpses of Piemur, but the main storyline is otherwise just touched upon briefly here and there and shown through different POVs. Knowing the first two trilogies will give context, I recommend reading those first anyhow, although the first trilogy has a seriously dated tone and attitude.

The first half of the book has a rather episodic feel to it, with different POVs in every chapter. I figured that I was reading one of these in-between books one doesn‘t really need. I really liked Jayge‘s storyline.

However, by the middle of the book many of those strands came together. It got pretty interesting and added new things to the overarching story of the world of Pern. We cover not just new, but also important ground. I really enjoyed myself, especially when we started to spend serious time on the Southern Continent, which is always fun.

Not to be skipped when making your way through the Dragonriders of Pern!

The most boring of all the books, despite the discovery of settler's secrets at the end. Half of the story lines are dropped half way through the book in favor of long passages from The White Dragon summarized from someone else's POV. Too bad it introduces new characters you need to be familiar with the for following books.

And look, I like a little outsider perspective as much as the next person. Not all the stories have to be told from the most important person's POV, but the outsiders she chose are just not interesting enough to carry a book for me. Toric is greedy, Thella is insane, Peimur is brash and daring. Awesome, that's pretty much all we needed to know, except there's 300 more pages to get through, and half of it summary of long periods of elapsed time. BORING. Sorry, Anne McCaffrey. You know I love you.

The book starts with a series of several short snippets told by a variety of characters. It was rather confusing and I forgot about many of them by the time they were introduced. Some were really minor characters after all.

I liked some of the stories, but most of them were just okay. The best one was of course Piemur's tale.

My sister told me this was Anne McCaffery's attempt to write a book without Robinton, but she failed. I'm glad she did, once Robinton comes in the book improves dramatically.

It took me a while to get into this book. I really didn't enjoy the Thella storyline. The archaeological elements of the cook and discoveries therein were my favorite parts. The ending was suitably gratifying, a nice pay off fully earned for us Pern readers who got this far.
