I gasped when cadence talked about her accident it broke my heart
I loved how descriptive the author was for the first few chapters
"I wanted to go back with a book" me too cadence
Gat flirting was so funny really brought some brightness to the awkwardness
"The universe was good because  he was in it"
My heart hurt for cadence  after she found out gat kept something  from her
"The universe is seeming really huge right now I need something to hold onto" gat said
"I'm here"
THE KISS YES!! IM SO HAPPY
Granny tipperšŸ˜
Mummy should of been nicer and let the kids grieve
How I hated mummy she was a drunk and loved to manipulate her kids I definitely feel this book was overhyped I hope book 2 redeems my hope for this
I feel this book would of been 10x better if it was longer and was more descriptive other then that the end pulled it to together for me
I hated the family and how mommy and granddad were such assholes to the kids and wanted to spilt gat and cadence up just because he's not white like take your racist bullshit elsewhere
We finally learn that Cady didn't hit her head on a swimming injury and it was a fire injury instead.
"I have lost you, gat because of how desperately, desperately I fell in love"
'It's good to be loved even though it will not last"
"Be a little kinder"
"Shut up I'm 10 already"

I got only halfway through the book and it is not appropriate for ages under 14. I heard that the farther you go the more inappropriate it gets.

I liked the speediness of this book. The short chapters ā¤ļø I'm seeing reviews that don't like the fractured writing but that's what got me in the first place. Despite the muddled, neurotic over-sentimentality, the writing didn't feel off-putting or clunky for me. At points I got some Merricat/WHALITC vibes. (Was that what E. Lockhart was going for, maybe?) Sometimes, I'm in the mood for this style idk. Also, maybe it's bc I'm a metiche chismosa but I was all in reading about the lazy, worse than parasites, rich, mentally stunted daughters and all the awful manipulation they did to their own kids to get their inheritance from the racist patriarch and the eventual self-destruction by the dumbest kids alive lmao. I guessed the plot twist ! and actually had a fun time reading this almost soap opera about racist white rich democrats (šŸ˜¬), but the ending was a little icky tho bc none of these characters deserve pity or second chances bc they didn't grow and I don't care about them becoming a "real" family.

The aesthetic and writing style of the novel are quite fitting and hauntingly beautiful. I also thought the concept of lying was really interesting because now having finished the book I''m left unsure of several narrative details. I know they were liars but which were the lies?! The reason I haven't rated this book higher is because the characters aren't lovable. The adults are all the yucky parts of American capitalism, elitism, privilege etc. (I'm aware that's the point). And the children don't give us anything to root for. The main romance in the novel
, between Cadence(Cady) and Gat,
comes too quickly and dwindles for the rest of the book. It becomes an awkward after thought rather than a place for romantic tension to build.

Damn this book. A very different writing style for me but I donā€™t hate it and I truly did like the characters and the plot for the book despite it being disturbing for me.
