Took me a while to read this because of life but it was SO GOOD! The themes of colonialism and rebellion are so well developed. You can definitely see the parallels between this fictional world and the French occupation of Algeria. I particularly enjoyed the discussion around language and how it feels to lose one's language due to colonisation. The feelings of loss and cultural disconnect as a result of it were masterfully portrayed.
The only thing I didn't particularly enjoy was the romance between Luca and Touraine - it felt underdeveloped and a bit confusing at times. I am however looking forward to see how it unfolds over the next installment.
Overall would highly recommend!

There are a lot of things I disliked about this. First and foremost, I never felt an attachment to any of the characters, which made stakes feel empty and made relationships (one a main story element) not feel very believable. The characters kept making dumb decisions and one of the two just felt so wishy-washy.
There are more granular bits and pieces I disliked but honestly it doesn't feel worth going into all that!
