I’m genuinely sad that this series is over. I highly recommend reading them for yourself. The author has created a mythology that feels far more vast and historical than what appears on the pages. The characters are rich and fun to watch over the course of the series.

Pretty much a triumphant conclusion to the series as the empire sets out to invade the Peninsula one final time and the fragile alliance of the three kingdoms struggle to make their people work together to drive them off. There are setbacks and betrayals and trials and losses, and some of the worst perils turn out not to be on the battlefield, but more or less in the soul of the Thief who is also High King. And as usual we see it all through the eyes of an unlikely narrator who has hidden strengths only the Thief is perceptive enough to spot first.
Although the novel itself lacks the usual mythical tale the rest of the books have always included, there is a short stry at the end that elegantly braids myth and reality - misleading terms because the gods in this world are real, and the it's a fantasy land not a real one, but you know what I mean.

This was such a good ending 😭😭😭. I didn't think this would be a five star, there was this weirdly paced part right in the middle where it started to slog, but gah damn did that ending fucking hit. Yes, I cried. Real tears.
Everything about this was great. The way the author is able to remain so consistent and have everything so entwined despite there being freaking 24 years between the first book and the last in this series holy shit. I love how they are able to introduce new characters and seamlessly integrate them into the broader narrative is phenomenal.
I'm so proud of Gen and Eddis and Attolia and Sophos their character development is everything.

I am bereft. As with any amazing series I have a love/hate feeling when I reach the end.
This book was a perfect ending to what may be my favorite series ever.
I am in awe of Megan Whalen Turner's writing skills. She made each book feel like a standalone but with intricate events in an arc.
To try and describe these books would be difficult. They are fantasy of course, and based on a fictional historical Greece/Rome but the author states it is fictitious and includes technology such as guns and cannons. There are three kingdoms with interweaving characters and plots. The political intrigues are a huge part. But I would even say the books have a touch of mystery novel to them in that each one has a plot twist that is unexpected, then explained, and then seems quite obvious. There are many characters from many different cultures and social classes. Romance is sometimes included but never a huge part. Enough action to keep them from feeling to politically bogged down.
The ending felt perfect.
I loved it.

What a friggin' disappointing way to end this series, with the back half of it painstakingly describing a war. War is boring!! Ugh. At least there were bright glimpses of our heroes being cute friends to carry me through.
“That is it, Sophos; you have hit on my greatest fear,” said the king. “Someone who named himself Bunny is going to outshine me on the battlefield.”
Thank you to MWT for writing such an amazing series and topping it off with this book. I loved Pheris as the narrator, he has a physical disability so he has a different worldview compare to other characters we’ve seen in the past. I liked the timeline of the book, it overlaps a little with Thick as Thieves so we get to see Kamet and Costis. I loved seeing the gods again, the petty rivalry between the two physicians, the pitneen coat, the political intrigue, Gen’s tricks, everything. A chunk of the book is set in war and it’s hard to read, since they’re characters we’ve gotten to know over the last 5 books.
I’m happy with the ending, MWT had to tie up the Mede invasion with this book and it seemed like a tough job. It’s a lot longer than the other books but it never dragged and I read it in less than a day. It was less twisty than I expected but I didn’t really miss it because I was fretting about my favourite characters’ fates the whole time.
Honestly couldn’t give this anything less than 5 stars. It isn’t my favourite of the series, that’s probably still either The King of Attolia or A Conspiracy of Kings but it was amazing and the series as a whole is definitely 5 stars. It’s timeless and I loved rereading it before I started this book. Would recommend a reread of the series too, I picked up so many details I didn’t notice on my first read.

A satisfying ending to my favorite series! Although I would have loved to be in Gen’s head again
