I really enjoyed the new perspective character introduced in this last book. I realized in reading this end to the series that this author has consistently kept me on my toes with limited foreshadowing. I like how she challenges her readers to think two steps ahead in strategy and consequences. However, the politics of war became pretty tedious by the middle of the book, and I was ready for the plot to move on more quickly.

The ending was good though.

Time to go lay on the ground for awhile, or look out at the passing river. The most intense reading experience of my LIFE!

I adored this series and am so emotional that it's over. Every book with a different narrator, taking a slightly different approach - I am going to miss Gen and Irene and Helen and Sophos so much. Everything was so thoughtful and even when the build is slow, it's so intricate, and it makes the payoff incredible every time. (Megan Whalen Turner invented enemies to lovers with a certain pair in this series btw i don't make the rules)

I'm not sure how to rate this one. I read The Thief and then gobbled up The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia in college. It's been many years and I have reread all of those books. I have read the two books that followed. From time to time, I'll crack open a thief book and reread my favorite parts. I love Gen. I love his flaws. I love his crazy relationship with Attolia.

This is one of my favorite series. But I've missed Gen. The last two books weren't the same without him playing a major part.

With Gen coming back, I was doomed to love this book. I loved every second of his crazy and the political mechanisms. This book felt epic. The nostalgia for me was on full blast.

That being said, my five star rating is based on the sweetness of enjoying the characters and world. I still prefer the first three books. This one moved a little too fast. Certain events were not given the time that they deserved. There were storyline threads that were dropped.

Some examples:

I thought Gen's sickness was going somewhere. But nope. He just got sick sometimes. That was it. I'm used to Turner's neat storylines where everything is important and ties into the end.

I also really wanted to know what happened to Eddis the country and the queen. To my understanding, the explosion happened while everyone was away at war? But what about the women and children?

After Gen received an answer about how he would die, I was fully expecting Gen to die at the end.

This was a good read. I closed this book and got lost in my thoughts. For me, there is no higher sign that I really enjoyed a book than being deep in thought after I finish a book. I can't remember the last time that happened.

4.5 Stars.

This was just really phenomenal. The audio book was great.
