I found the first half of the book slightly slow and boring, it picked up around halfway through. Ending felt rushed. Good writing style though.
FANTASTIC!!! Not sure how I missed that this was about vampires- SK says it pretty clearly in his blurb. But it was a great surprise. Just good old fashioned FUN to read. Only docked half a star bc the beginning, after he moves to London, was SO boring to me. After that, I didn't put it down till I was done.
Generally entertaining historical fiction/vampire novel. Some may be put off my the roving POV.
A lovely melancholy book, sparsely written, as if Hemingway had written a vampire novel and set it in the Victorian era.
This book started out with a lot of promise. The first few chapters, while somewhat slow, were full of victorian intrigue and literature. I found myself sucked into the story of Victorian London and its interesting characters.
But I am so sick of vampire stories!
As soon as that aspect of the story was revealed I found myself rolling my eyes and losing interest. If it had just been a vampire part to consider, I might have stuck with the book, but the writing really disintegrated too.
The beginning of the story is written in typical story/novel format, but the second part of the story is written as a journal. I generally have a hard time reading books written in journal format and don't find them very enjoyable. This journal format wasn't written in a very easy to follow manner and I had a hard time keeping my focus on the book.
I thought this book offered a lot of promise and I had been excited to read it, but I just couldn't muster any enthusiasm for the vampire aspects. If you're looking for a new take on a vampire story, definitely check out this book, but if you're sick of vampires in novels, stay away from this book.
I received this book for review purposes via NetGalley.

While the premise was great, I found that the characters were a bit two dimensional as it was difficult to really care for them. For something that was compared to Buffy, Sherlock Holmes, and Harry Potter, I had a lot of expectations. I did enjoy the Gothic feel and the first 100 pages had me drawn in but, afterwards, I began to lose interest--the plot itself was anemic.
Man I am really striking out in 2015. Have I read anything good? Morbid and creepy, I probably should have realized it was about vampires and never started...
