Genuinely interesting setting

,  especially with the homogeneous retail hellscape playing as the natural continuation of a haunted prison/labor camp site

. Also, the inclusion of the "Orsk" store materials is a fun bit of flair!

BUT...flat and unlikeable characters and super mid pacing + prose are both made objectively worse by the "edgy white horror guy" standard sensitivity pitfalls--super flat POC who are the two most annoying side characters, random fatphobia, reference to holocaust themes as shock value etc.

Generally, the book is a miss and best case strong adaptation fodder.

This book is absolutely my type of book. The themes are fun and quirky while also being dark and grim. There were very few points where I knew what was going to happen next, so I was constantly kept on my toes. I loved the fast pace, though I could’ve kept reading this for hours and hours. Probably my only complaint is that it was too short!

A campy, disgusting trip through a haunted Ikea-like store. Fun, easy read that’s a little clunky and perhaps overwritten in parts, but overall a great time with a hokey ghost-infused take on capitalism, the labour myth, and the prison industrial complex.

Oh and the book design has to be mentioned. Styled after an IKEA catalog and filled throughout with product designs like you would expect in a manual, as well as some other surprises, it absolutely adds to the campy delight of this book. Kudos to the designers!
