As someone who knows nothing about the history and war in Sri Lanka I was a little lost for the first 100 pages but after a quick google and getting further into the book, it did start to pick up and the pieces came together. 

I can understand why this won a Booker Prize and I can agree with that but overall wasn’t my favourite book.

This was a haunting portrayal of a person of color intersected with LGBTQIA+ community within the war-torn country of Sri Lanka. As I listened to the narrator convey the story in stark clarity, I was struck by the poignancy of the author’s woven tapestry of words and how with every description, accent, and intonation I was transported from my current reality into this fictional (yet historically accurate) world beyond. Through this book, the author provided a window with which I could clearly view as if it were my own experience. As cliche as it sounds, I feel richer having read this work of art.
