I had been looking forward to reading Dead Woman Walking since reading the opening chapter via a link from the author. I had an anxious few weeks to think about what would happen before I was lucky enough to receive a proof copy and the opportunity to participate in the blog tour.
The first few chapters detailing the events surrounding the hot-air balloon crash have put me off for life. They were very convincing, and I don’t like to think about which of the passengers I would have had a similar reaction to.
Once I had started reading it was hard to stop. The just one more chapter rule didn’t apply, some of them were very short so I dropped everything and just read constantly. Dropping all the other books that I was reading at the same time.
The narrative was mainly in the present day but it did jump back occasionally to reveal events from Jessica and Isobel’s childhood. These parts gave hints to why Isobel ended up in the convent and why Jessica became a police officer. There are also a few flashbacks concerning Ajax, the police officer involved in the investigation into the hot-air balloon.
I loved the storyline concerning the convent, the cleverly named peafowl and the existence that all the Nuns had. I had never considered that a Nun might have had a family of her own and a connection to the outside world and I had never thought that Nuns might watch TV or have an interest in solving crime. They were all the most likeable characters in the novel.
It’s difficult to say anything about the plot without spoilers so I would just say if you like a novel that tackles a subject that is mentioned often in the news and has plenty of twists then you will love this book. A great follow up to Daisy in Chains.
With thanks to the publisher for the copy received.

I am so glad I have read this book after having been on a hot air balloon as I don’t think I would ever go on one after having read this book!

This has such a compelling start to it with the passengers on board a hot air balloon witnessing a murder on the ground. You would think that being so far up in the air that they would be safe but you would be wrong! To a certain extent I had to suspend belief with certain parts of this story. The main protagonist who is the only survivor from the crash goes on the run which the reasoning is explained further on down the line but even then I still felt I had to stretch my belief in some areas as certain things niggled me more than they should, other than that this really is an intense and engrossing read.

The author kept me guessing throughout as to the why’s of why the killer had murdered someone and why they were hell bent after finding the one remaining witness before the police. I would never have guessed the whole reasoning but as things start to come to light, it really makes this story even darker.

Dead Woman Walking really is a chill fest of a read. It was so addictive and I struggled to tear myself away from my Kindle as the need to know with this story really is intense and on that score the author does not let her reader down. The twists towards the backend of the book are complete shockers as I hadn’t even had an inkling of them coming so they blew me away when they happened. A couple I had to go back and reread just to make sure I had read them right. A highly entertaining story that will have you on the edge of your seat!

I had gotten this out of the library a while ago but had trouble getting into it. But the audiobook was available on Hoopla and to celebrate a NEW LACEY FLINT, I figured I should catch up on all of Bolton's stuff.

And this was a good time. The beginning is very action-packed and exciting. I did get spoiled about MoJo being dead, which meant it seemed obvious that Maldonado (?) was the corrupt officer. And I wondered if Isabel was our survivor, but it still surprised me!

I was so worried about Isabel towards the end, knowing that Ajax wasn't going to help her. But then her brother saved the day (I had wondered if he was the cop). Her brother who we believed had raped and impregnated her.

And then she met with him to...talk it out? Let bygones be bygones? Because "blood is thicker"? I was feeling physically ill. The idea that the person who saved her was a rapist who had taken advantage of his own sister was horrific. And I was really worried that's where we were heading.

But then it was her dad. Hoo-ray question mark?

The ending was a lot. But the book was a good time and I definitely liked it more than The Split so...high 3.

Though I feel like human trafficking for organs feels similar to the baby selling plot of another one of her books lol

I did appreciate Harry making an appearance, though.
