Interesting. But mostly dark due to how it all ended. He’d tried to lighten the load by highlighted the small time rocker life and their antics, but there was a dark cloud hanging over everything (understandably).

3 ⭐️ this was great to read as a joy division fan!! but also as a fan of factory records, the sex pistols and punk in general. ofc peter hook isnt the best writer bc his strongpoint is music, duh. still a very cool book and nice to see what ian was really like instead of just having 24 hr party people and control as portrayals of him.

this was a good read ngl, an informative band biography but also a total ramble/stream of consciousness from hooky

The US edition is one of the most beautiful books I have seen in a long while, reading it on a long journey whilst listening to JD was an absolute pleasure. Written in a straight forward and engaging style (with a number of typos) its worth picking up.....judge this book by its cover!

Just like sitting down in the pub with a pint and having Peter Hook tell you the story of Joy Division, with all the resulting side stories and anecdotes you would expect. Great story about normal guys that did something amazing.
cynstagraphy's review against another edition
Real and human (too human) biography of one of the most iconic bands of the last decades, from within.

there's this really horrible feeling you get in your chest when you reach the last third of this book. obviously you know what's going to happen, because it's a real recount of joy division and you know what happens to joy division because you're a fan and its basic cultural knowledge. but still you find yourself hoping that somehow things are going to go differently - you're so invested in hook's life and the silly stories of the band and how promising their future was. you can't bear the thought of it being over so quickly.
written by peter hook, this book isn't anywhere near being high brow literature. there's a lot of questionable tangents and petty snide comments towards people. regardless, it's mostly fun (some moments had me genuinely laughing out loud, definitely amplified by hook's informal tone and northern slang) and, as someone who's knowledge of joy division barely spanned further than the 2006 film control, i learned a lot.
definitely a book for any fan of joy division, whether their interest is casual or hardcore.
