Fun read! Th blending of fantasy elements and a dystopian future came across a little jerky in some areas, but it was a refreshing change of pace from you standard high fantasy story.

I definitely see why Red Queen has maintained hype over the years. The main characters are interesting—though our FMC is definitely a little more whiney than I typically prefer—and the twists were great!

Second reading - I still really enjoyed the story and characters. This time I could see the signs of Mare having powers and the subtle inner workings of some characters. Hopefully, the rest of the series propels the revolution at the fast pace that this one does with some results. I'd also love to learn more about the underground city where the Scarlet Guard is headquartered.

I see a parallel of Hunger Games and The Selection (first book, at least) in this book. The royal family, desire for a revolution by the oppressed people, classism... All themes that are so relatable for many readers. Mare's struggle to find her place in the world is timeless, and the loyalty and trust she requires to survive pushes everything forward. I loved this book and how intricately the character motivations were written. Hopefully, subsequent books shed light on how Mare's world shifted from our own and why she is different. I will definitely reader further into the series.

SCREAMING I HATE IT HERE AND I AM SO MADDDD!!!!

I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU! WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?! you know who you are 😤

sigh. anyways... I actually enjoyed this book more than I thought I was going to since I'm so late to the game with this one and YA fantasy vibes. Overall, it was entertaining although I thought the pacing was a bit weird. The first half was definitely slower and then the second half was so fast that I could barely catch a breath.

Maybe I'm naive or it's my romance-reading heart BUT I DID NOT SEE THE TWIST COMING WITH YOU KNOW WHO AND I WAS ABSOLUTELY RAGING AT IT!!! I get it, but why? Please, don't make him my villain. I love him, but not like this 😭

Nonetheless, it did keep me on my toes when all. the twists were coming in the end, some I kinda saw coming since I knew it was a series but it is what it is. I can only imagine the rage of readers who read it when it was first released before the rest of the series was finished/out LOL. I am so excited to continue and see where this series goes since there is so many possibilities!
