I definitely felt like the plot kept me on my toes and progressed well. However, the ending seemed rather rushed. I struggled with the MMC at first just because he felt a bit flat, but he grew on me throughout the book. Loved the FMC - the research station’s cook. She was down-to-earth and definitely easy to identify with freezing at the South Pole.
Moderate: Gun violence and Sexual content

The mostly setting of Antarctica felt very real - it had obviously been well researched. I really enjoyed the romance as well.
It felt a bit flat at the end 25% where it was clearly setting up the series to come.
Contains:
Grumpy sunshine
??? Is he autistic, maybe
Sex with contraception 😤
Only having sex with clean bodies yay!
Tragically only one real sex scene
A very Big Bad conspiracy that if so unreal you just have to roll with it
Graphic: Murder, Medical content, Injury/Injury detail, Blood, and Gun violence
Moderate: Sexual content
Minor: Suicide and Sexual harassment

Angel and Ford and all the ‘Poleys’ were so loveable. You really feel their connection since they only had each other out there. The challenges Angel and Ford faced were rough but I liked how the author used these situations to focus on how inner strength is what gets you through situations like this. That and luck. I’m glad the sexual tension wasn’t as big a part of the plot as some books make it. When they were doing bad they weren’t being super horny teenagers, they were leaning on each other for moral support when they thought they were gonna die. Basically, it felt more natural and sexual at the appropriate times. Don’t need mentions of his rockin bod when he’s in critical condition yk?
Spoilers ahead
I’m also a sucker for an emotionally distant hero (irl too unfortunately). I loved how he let down his guard around her and then freaked about it. That’s so realistic for someone with that avoidant attachment lol. He convinced himself he’s better off alone and then had to come grovel to get her back and we love to see it. Ppl don’t magically change and it took him some time to realize he was unhappy and being a coward.
I enjoyed Ford’s brother and both of their backstories. They were both scarred in ways that affected their everyday life. She has a bad knee from a car accident and he has scarring from his time in the military that makes talking difficult. They both had to deal with these issues and more when on the ice, which did them no favors. The elements seemed to work against them in a realistic way that I respected. Ford loved the ice but that doesn’t mean it was harmless. That environment is no joke.
Basically I had a good time reading about loveable characters and a twisty, interesting plot. I may check out more books by this author!
