The Last Trail is the third in the series (sometimes called the Fort Henry Trilogy, sometimes the Ohio River Trilogy) which gives a fictionalized account of Grey's ancestors on the American frontier during and following the American Revolution. Lots of bloodshed and romance. I loved the vivid, rich descriptions of the natural surroundings. The books were very similar in plot and probably too bloody for some readers, but I guess that's what life was like at the time.

The Last Trail by Zane Grey
Story of Fort Henry and it's occupants and how some travel there to set up their farm to work it.
Even with the military being there the bordermen can't handle all the corruption of the Indians and their friends.
Helen and her father and nephew have arrived and she's quite put off one of the bordermen won't pay attention to her.
Story takes you to the places the bordermen hunt for those who've stolen the horses and women. You feel like you're there with them as they crawl along the ground
and smell and touch and see things in the surroundings.

4 stars just because it's Zane Grey. A very entertaining little western with horse thieves, good and bad native Americans, and the beginnings of civilization in the Ohio River valley.

We inherited several Zane Grey stories from grandparents on both sides, so figured they must be worth reading. This was my first.

It was a fun story, very predictable and followed the western stereotypes, including some racist Native American stereotypes. Nevertheless, it was entertaining and oh so noble. There was nothing challenging or unexpected and the writing wasn't notable, however it never claimed pretension. Overall, an enjoyable few hours! I think I'll read another!
