I haven't been so enthralled by a new series in decades. It's on par with all forms of media post apocalyptic art from the 80s and slightly beyond. Instead of the tedious and formal practice of 'world building'--the most corrupt thing that has ever happened to modern literature--the world is simply presented to us, embedded in an actual story with emotional resonance, a plot and narrative with real political force, and a breakneck pace that keeps one reading. It's a dense and layered world, not just a design oriented exercise with nothing at its core, like much of the work of Jeff Lemire.

We've met only half of the various families mentioned in the first volume, and I can't wait to meet the rest and to start to get some answers about what brought on the apocalypse and who the mysterious Strangers really are.

Bring on the Sex Castle and the Hot Boys!!

This is one hell of first volume.  Roesenburg's post apocalyptic take on young "families" fight for survival in world we don't understand keeps the narrative moving. He doles out answers slowly and only future volumes will reveal what's going on. Not sure there is much he's saying here, but for a first volume, certainly a fun, interesting, graphically imaginative beginning.

A 3.5. Intriguing start. A bit wordy, but does a decent amount of world building very quickly and gives us enough of a handle on the plot and characters to make us want to come back. Art reminds of Paper Girls with less blues.
