I had mistakenly assumed that Rushdie was a dry religious writer (not sure why), until one of my best former students told me that she thought that Midnight's Children was one of the best books she'd ever read. Now it's one of the best books that I've ever read, too.

This book brought very mixed thoughts to my mind half way through. I was confused about what just happened, and I finally gave up trying to comprehend. It was a drag ... a very extreme drag at it. Putting the book down now! 1 star
I think this book had a lot of promise given the time period it is set in, but ultimately, it fell short of its promise by a long shot. The hardest thing for me when reading it was getting into the story, the writing and pacing are pretty poor and I consistently found myself getting confused - I found it really difficult to follow along. The beginning of the book did an awful job of setting the story and the characters up, it was arduous keeping track of all the characters and different time periods. Trim out all the unnecessary plot points and the book would be a lot better.
