DS Washington Poe returns in the fourth book of the series. The case of a man found beaten to death in a backstreet brothel in Carlisle pulls Poe & Tilly away from almost certain victory in Poe's court case fight to keep his home. It seems that they have been specifically requested by higher powers (MI5) to investigate the case, but as they are drawn deeper into the investigation, it becomes clear that someone is putting roadblocks in their way.

Most of the gang is still around: Tilly of course, FBI Agent Melody Lee returns in a greater capacity in this book, whilst characters such as DCI Nightingale have walk-on parts this book. Unfortunately there's no DI Flynn who is still recovering from the events of the previous book & very little Edgar (Poe's dog) either. Again the plot is rather complex & as events unfold, things don't go the way you expect. Although it was good & the friendship between Poe & Tilly is as funny as ever, it didn't quite live up to the first three books in my view. I was actually able to work most of it out for a change. 4.5 stars (rounded down)
