Excellent short story collection that delves into generational and embodied trauma, maternal wounds, poverty, domestic violence, abandonment, disease, death, and story telling. The stories feature narratives of Latina women of Native American ancestry in the American West. My favorite was "Any Further West" with "Sugar Babies" and "Tomi" as close runners up. Some of the stories did, however, feel like they weren't completly fleshed out hence the 4.0 star rating.

This was a really beautiful collection. I only rate it not 5 stars because I wish each story was more drawn out so we could see the depth and progression of these characters.

I am not usually a fan of short stories. I read for characters and I always find myself wanting more from short stories but found myself satisfied at the end of each story. These stories are rich with character development but where Fajardo-Anstine shines is in creating a sense of place and the way she deals with themes of home, homeland, belonging, and displacement. I was instantly transported to Colorado, some places unknown and some familiar. She also deals with mother daughter relationships in a beautiful but very sad way. I read this for book club and we agreed that had any of these stories been a full length book, they would have been too dark and sad.

I found this really difficult to rate. Firstly, really interesting stories and an important collection of stories to diversify readers. However, I felt like some were better than others and that's why it's partially a lower rating. I would also note that I listened to this as an audiobook and it was hard for it to grip my attention for all the stories which also could have impacted my rating.
