I'm going to let you in on a secret: I am a big ol' baby. This book makes me happy (and then, cry!) every time I read it and every time it comes across my desk, I read it again. It is my absolute favorite library story and I have a lot of great ones in my book rolodex. I cannot tell you what it is, but this book has it. The nostalgia of discovering the library for the first time? The illustrations that so perfectly mirror the feeling of the book? Great characters and a sweet story? Yes, give me all of that, please.

Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen is a cute story of a lion becoming a helper at the library. The Lion shows up one day and stays for story time, where he finds he loves stories. The Lion learns the rules from Miss Meriweather, who is a rule stickler, which include no roaring. The Lion shows up early every day before story time to help Miss Meriweather until one day when Miss Meriweather falls and breaks her arm. To get Mr. McBee's attention the Lion has to roar very loud which he knows is against the rules so afterward the Lion leaves and doesn't come back for several days until Mr. McBee informs him that sometimes rules need to be broken. This book is wonderful for teaching about library rules/rules in general and how sometimes in emergencies rules need to be broken. This book is also a feel-good story for children and would be a wonderful read-aloud in a primary classroom. I would use this book in my classroom to teach rules and how sometimes rules can be flexible. The book also has humor as it is a lion in the library.

This engaging book is about a lion who wanders into the library and decides to stay. He listens to storytimes and helps library staff with dusting and other tasks. But when he breaks library rules he is told to leave. In the end, even the strict assistant librarian realizes and sometimes there is a good reason to break the rules. The illustrations are lovely and as a librarian who loves cats, I couldn't resist this one.

An oversized book with charming pictures and charming text, Library Lion was a winner for us. (My librarian friend recommended it.) "Sometimes there was a good reason to break the rules. Even in the library."

This is a fun, well-crafted story for kids that didn't make me cringe when Owen asked to read it. The illustrations are wonderful.
