Love it

A very good mystery novel. Love the twist. The author does a great job of building up the characters just enough to make the story good.

Yara is the most uncurious protagonist you could ever be stuck with. She had no interest in what was going on around her when it was obvious that there was something majorly wrong with her family. The girl referred to murder as "drama" lol.

I DNF'd this book. It came to me free, marketed as a thriller, but the first chunk of the book was all drama with a little bit of intrigue, and I just could not keep reading. I won’t give it a rating though, because that seems unfair, since I did not finish….

It was very intriguing and moved at a good pace though I think there were a few parts where a little too much suspension of disbelief was needed especially considering Yara’s job and the background knowledge it would give her. But at the same time the author did a wonderful job of showing how all the trauma and confusion and gaslighting she had been going through that some of it makes sense.

We Lie Here had a pretty clear storyline and characters who are complete and good but there were elements of the book that I didn’t like, but could get past to keep reading the book. I did have the ending pegged 1/4 of the way in but kept reading to see if I was right. I was.

It drove me nuts how Yara wouldn’t call Felicia back who seemed desperate to talk to her and give her information. But given the family history, I guess I understand why. But seriously annoying.

I got a little bored in the middle while the detecting revved up. Too much time was spent talking about the details of the party (even tho that’s what Felicia was there for) and less about the murder mystery. Too much repetitive situations and dialogue.

The “to go bag”? The stupidest thing ever that no one in the household ever looked in the bag in all of their growing up years nor questioned their mother about its contents. Didn’t make sense to me at all. Kids are naturally curious cats.

It seemed a little hokey to me that Yara knew more about how to police than her girlfriend, the police woman, and the detectives did. Standard 101 to check video footage of the area when a murder occurs. Yara had to ask her police woman friend about that with a deer in the headlights response. Not to mention she’s discussing an ongoing investigation with an outsider. Taboo.

The ending was a letdown simply because I had the killer pegged from the beginning—the psycho—the drama behind Yaya’s anxiety, and the burial plot. It’s too bad there wasn’t a surprise twist to prove me wrong.

This book is riddled with swearing, which is against my values but I read it anyway

Definitely times where I thought I knew exactly where the story was going, but was given the run around (in a good way) throughout the whole book. Slightly formulaic, but still entertaining. The big reveal is equal parts unsurprising and shocking (because of our villain’s motives).

Did not expect that plot twist! The story is so well written. Wish there was more to say what happened in the end
