I loved the story at first and the characters were so endearing, but the 6 year age gap…them meeting at 10 and 16 then dating at 17 and 23…especially with Ox sexualizing and getting turned on by Joe who is a MINOR. I also just got annoyed with Ox constantly bringing up how his dad left and how his dad told him he’d “always get shit.” Ox would always be mentioning it and I get it’s the root of his insecurities but damn we GET ITTTTT. You don’t have to keep mentioning it every 15 pages.

PREFACE: There's a clear and obvious debate about the ethics of the relationship between the 2 main characters. I knew this going into it, so I wasn't as "disturbed" as I could have been when it came up because I knew and had time to process/form my opinions on it PRIOR to reading. After reading though, I'd say the situation was alright and even acceptable given the context.
While the age gap could have started off at a more appropriate age range or the main characters could've been closer in age to begin with... I do understand why the author did it. BUT in my opinion, it doesn't seem problematic given the fact that there relationship was 100% innocent until he was of age (technically a few months off from 18) and if you think about it, JOE consistently had more power/influence over Ox throughout the years, so if anyone was groomed it was Ox (but I don't think anyone was groomed in this situation).
The vibes were giving little sibling who admired/looked up to their older siblings friend. It was infatuation for sure on Joes end but on Ox's end, he was VERY respectful and gave off older caring brother energy ONLY when Joe was growing up. He cared for him and loved him (obviously) but it was written in a clear way that it was not romantic, or sexual, or lustful UNTIL he was older. That could be a problem, but the way this was written made it clear that Ox had ZERO interest in doing anything with Joe until he was of age and just realized the feelings he had for him AFTER he matured into what looked like a grown man.

‼️if a relationship between 2 people that are 17 (almost 18) and 22 are going to bother you, DO NOT READ.

On to the actual review, this book was PHENOMENAL. Probably one of my favorite books by TJ Klune that I've read so far. I was instantly hooked and found myself picking up the book in every spare moment of time I could to keep getting more and more. The characters were built up perfectly and everyone had such different personalities and backgrounds it made the story feel complete, diverse, and interesting. At parts it did drag out a bit more than it needed to
especially during the time when Joe was gone

but it was still a 5 star read. The writing made ME feel connected with the characters and that I was a part of the pack too. I can't wait to read the rest of the books and I hope it's a happy ending after all this.
