“Everything dies” he whispered back.
“I am afraid of so much more than dying.”

I had my doubts about this book...I was so wrong! All those damn plot twists! I kinda got some Eragon vibes from this book but in a good way.

When I first started it, I felt like the pacing was a little bit slow. But it does steadily increase, although, it lulled in certain areas.

The characterizations were wonderful. I liked Asha from the start, but after uncovering revelation after revelation, and seeing her grow, made me like her even more. One of the things I loved the most was the strength of the females characters. Hearing about Willa, and seeing Asha and her cousin continuously endure and overcome the brutality in their lives was so damn fulfilling.

The world building and descriptions were beautiful and vibrant. They were enough to immerse you in the world without drowning you in too many descriptions. I loved the dragons, I wish there had been more about them!

I laughed, I cried, I cheer for joy, I screamed out in anger. It was the best emotional roller coaster I ever had. Even though I predicted “the biggest revelation”, Kirsten still managed to weave in more surprises.

I cannot wait for the next book!!

A refreshing YA fanstasy. With dragons! I'm not sure where the next two books will take us, but this first one was a great read.

I enjoyed reading this book, as I read it. However, I did not become fully connected to the story, so I will probably not continue the series. So, while it was enjoyable, there was no staying power- 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

At first I didn’t think this would be for me... but like a lot of things I’ve read recently, I’ve persevered and been pleasantly surprised. This book is full of anger and heartache but the journey to redemption that the Iskari takes is truly incredible.

Also there’s romance but it is definitely slow burn, low action. I liked its subtlety.

This book was a three stars all around, I feel like nothing about it was amazing and nothing about it was terrible. (Besides maybe the insta love trope but it's a YA book so I often give that trope a pass.) I knew it was a YA read but was surprised by how YA it read especially being a little more "grim dark". I think the author really just played it safe. The old stories were interesting and I wish I had got more of that and more of the legends. Less of the main character who was quite boring and one dimensional. As I write this review I feel like it seems I didn't like the book BUT I DID! I enjoyed it but is it my next big recommended read to everyone no. Did it break fantasy boundaries and play with tropes in a new fun way no. Was it entertaining yes! Did I like the pace of the book yes! Did I finish it in three days YES! We're the dragons cool. Yes! That is all.
