Goodman captured the feel of being a camp lifer well. But the mystery was lacking.

So many mixed emotions here. The ending was a lot nicer than I had expected because everything really big was tied together at the end. Definitely didn't expect "the bad guy" to be who it was. And spending half of the book wondering how Goldie's big secret would come into play was not my favorite. But the way camp was described - the camaraderie and experiences and the overwhelming excitement of returning to it all - are things that were very palpable. Despite having never been a camp kid, I could relate to those feelings because they were so well presented. Hands down a book I know I can return to in the future and enjoy just as much as I have on this first read through.

the queen of ya thriller has done it again!
jessica goodman delivered a beautiful tale of friendship, grief, and the secrets we keep to keep others safe.
we follow goldie throughout this story as it shifts between past memories to recent day. we see the build of her relationship with heller, and also the downfall.
the friendships are so pure in this book. the girls would do anything for each other, and i loved getting to know them.
the vivid imageries of summer camp made me so happy, and nostalgic. i love love love reading books about summer camp and this hit every bit. it felt like i was right there inside camp alpine lake.
i did figure out one of twist, and had a feeling the second one was coming but it was still a very good twist that i enjoyed.
i really enjoyed this book, i think goodman is a fantastic writer and i’m always excited for her books!
-- i was given an earc of this book in exchange for an honest review. all thoughts are my own.

3.5 stars
im a sucker for a summer camp setting but the pacing of the murder mystery aspect was just a tad slow for me. i wanted more clues throughout. this book does mainly focus on navigating friendship which was nice but it made the mystery take a backseat for 75% of the book. i did find the ending satisfying and i didnt quite guess everything.
