“We never would have believed, my dear Jose, that so much glory could fit into a shoe."

A fictional account of Simon Bolivar, the Liberator of many South American nations, and his final days. I knew nothing about Bolivar going into this book, and what particularly struck me was how he didn't seem like the stereotypical military leader. Towards the end of his life, he was humble almost to the point of self-deprecation. At times there was a mythical quality to this book, where it felt like I was reading a fairy tale gone wrong. It's the kind of book that might take a few more reads for me to truly wrap my head around it. But even still, I enjoyed it.

Very interesting, although a bit of a slow read. Originally picked up for his famous last words, "Damn, how do I get out of this Labyrinth?!" I was not disappointed, if anything excited for this book.

DID NOT FINISH: 11%

Long paragraphs, long chapters explaining the same thing over and over. It's a slow book, not for me.

3.5 Stars.

Simón Bolívar - Great Man History would like a word with you, el Caudillo. A slow book, brought to life through the vivid clutches of the General's illness and vitality. Márquez could never write a bad book - and even contained to a commitment to reality, there is something magical about his writing, and his characters.

"Love has made you free."

Well written like the authors other works, yet much slower paced. At times difficult to get through, however; I loved the final stretch of the book and the glimpses into the General’s ever present nostalgia. Maybe upon revisiting the book the pace and the content will be easier to get through.

¡Ah, Gabo!
