HST guts the 80s. Introduces me to the Duvaliers just weeks before Baby Doc pops back on the scene. Predicts Reagan's senility. Bows out with the defeat of the dream to Bush I.

To put it bluntly, I am not knowledgeable enough to fully enjoy this book. This collection revolves around politics in the late 80's, specifically the 1988 presidential election. I really don't know much about this era of history so I felt like a lot of the information in the book went over my head. However, I really enjoyed his style of writing. The way he chose to use quotes from Revelations was always interesting and I really enjoyed the metaphors sprinkled in.

Despite not having the right background knowledge to fully understand everything in this book, I really enjoyed the writing. I will definitely read more by Hunter S Thompson in the future, but I'm going to choose books that don't require as much background as this one did.

I know most people don't like 80's and 90's HST but I don't know why.

Sure it's not [b:Fear and Loathing|7745|Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream|Hunter S. Thompson|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1165639648s/7745.jpg|1309111] On The Campaign Trail, but what is?

This is a great collection of HST's work. Though dramatic and eccentric and down-right psychotic at times, it doesn't make his truth's about the world in the 1980s and less poignant. He was too smart for his own good and could see the patterns in human behavior and put the pieces together before a lot of others could.

Sprinkled throughout the ranting are wild tales of boozing and gallivanting and I love to hear stories about Ralph Steadman and a cast of characters that HST calls his friends.

I would highly recommend this book.

P.S. Only one negative comment regarding the audio book reader--though I appreciate the effort of the company to find someone to read Hunter's work and attempt to bring his passion, energy, and overzealous emotion, I found the guy's voice to be a little screechy and annoying at times.

Good but not great, disappointing compared to his other work. Instead of collecting Thompson's best writing from the 80's, this book simply catalogues all the columns he wrote over a set period. Because of this, Generation of Swine isn't as good as The Great Shark Hunt, the first book in the Gonzo Papers series.

Generation of Swine is eating the same thing for two out of three meals, day after day.

DNF. Too much celebrity name dropping and the crazy over the top stuff got very tiring very quickly... I used to love Thompson but either I've aged badly or his writing has...
