Può una figlia cambiare la vita di un uomo in un solo istante? Può l'amore di un padre essere talmente accecante e incondizionato da trasfigurare la realtà, plasmarla, creare un ponte tra ciò che è vero e ciò che è immaginazione? Può condurre un uomo alla pazzia? Può essere contemporaneamente perdizione e salvezza?
Selma Lagerlöf ci dice che sì, è possibile, se quel padre è Jan di Skrolycka e se la figlia è Klara Gulla. Ce lo dice con una fiaba commovente (e a tratti irritante), con una narrazione quasi sognante, toni delicati e quell'aroma dolce di fiori che stanno per appassire che hanno le storie della tradizione.
