Warning: prepare for total nerdiness and obvious attachment issues over an old favorite TV show I still refuse to let go of!

Okay, here I go.

As a huge fan of the series when it was airing (and still rewatching it whenever I feel like it), I instantly picked this up when I found it staring at me at the Barnes and Noble comic book section a couple of weeks ago. I (unseccessfully) tried to get years ago when it was first published, so this was my chance.

I feel totally biased reviewing this as I was thrilled to get even a small taste of the story after the finale -- (I rewatched the last three seasons recently). I felt like the illustrations only vaguely reminded me of the characters/actors but the dialogue was almost spot on. I especially enjoyed the Lois and Clark scenes -- of course!

Lex was the biggest surprise. I was never happy with how his story was mishandled in the series -- and the whole clone aspect and memory loss that was done in the finale just felt like all build up from previous seasons of the main villain was entirely thrown out the window. It was such a waste. Why watch Lex's beginning in the TV show if it will all be wiped away?

However, I was hoping to see this comic make up for that a little bit by showing an impressive and cunning mastermind in Lex - like he was always supposed to be at this point. I was not disappointed here. He turned out to be a villain to watch out for, a real threat to Superman and his image in the world. And it's interesting because this is set at a time when both of them are just coming out as themselves, so to speak. There's a newborn novelty to Lex Luthor and Superman - a trial and error time for them both. I've always enjoyed the parallels between Clark and Lex in the earlier seasons, so it's nice to see a similar pattern now that they are enemies. I liked the scene when Superman was provoked by Lex to the point that he lost his temper and broke into Lex's office.

The dialogue between Oliver and Chloe left a little to be desired. It fell flat and bordered on cheesy sometimes, but the Lois and Clark dialogue was all fun.

The pages wih General Lane shooting at Superman kinda confused me, especially given the last encounter between him and Clark in the final season -- he clearly figured out who he was and even seemed comforted that a noble superhuman would look after Lois. And now he's blasting guns at him? I like Superman's response to Lois about it: "Your father is a psychopath!" Pretty accurate.

I'm excited to read the rest of the volumes. I hope this gets better instead of worse!
