This book made me really sad - wish there was more time spent in the upward arc at the end

I honestly found this book quite hard to read at times, it doesn't go into huge detail but it can be quite triggering. It does also push the YA title a bit, definitely a more older YA novel.

June and Jayne broke me. They very obviously still love each other but both too stubborn to break that barrier. The slow reconnection of these sisters is very emotional but heartwarming.

Jayne has such an interesting POV. She is a very very flawed character.
I like that even when she does admit she has issues, she never uses them as an excuse for her behaviour.
Reading her spiral was hard, her personality really grew on me and all I wanted was for her to communicate with those who actually cared for her!!

I loved the realistic ending to this chapter of Jayne and he family's lives.
Tensions have lifted, and secrets have been revealed. These characters get to grow even more now that they're connected and honest.

couldn’t even get passed the first 20 pages because i personally am in a very bad place with my numbers fixation and even the content warning at the beginning of the book set me off.

Ultimately I think the book wasn't bad and handled a lot of sensitive topics and complicated family relationships well, I just found the characters to be kinda awful. Considering this is a majorly character driven book, their judgemental and sometimes downright mean personalities were rough to get behind. Their character growth seemed delayed- the people they were over halfway through the book could've been swapped with who they were at the beginning and you wouldn't notice a thing. The last 100ish pages were definitely the book's greatest strength and easily my favorite part.

Yolk, Mary Choi - 4/5, ok the protagonist is like a mess. Super realistic but not very likeable for me, and the book was not super interesting at times but holy shit the ending hits hard. And like. “I would have been happy with three girls, too. That would have been wonderful, to gather all of you in my arms like a bouquet.” fucking sobbing, oh my god I feel this book really highlights how difficult family is but how they are really there for you at your lowest. My heart aches.
