AAPI + New York City — so many of my favorite things combined! Even though I’m an only child, her depiction of a sibling relationship, fraught with tension and conflict, seemed so realistic. You can annoy the heck out of each other, resent each other, but at the end of the day, they’re still your sibling. The binge eating scenes also felt so real. A few critiques: relationship with Patrick was so rushed and he seemed like an unrealistic Prince Charming, there was an overwhelming amount of f-bombs and “Jesuses”, and dialogue seemed very manufactured and too poetic at times, almost John Greene-like.
(4.5) This depiction of a complex sister relationship was raw and emotional, and I loved it. Jayne and June felt so real to me, and while they did border on unlikeable at times, but I think that really added to the story.
Mary H. K. Choi is an incredible writer and I hope to read more from her.

Really loved the way the book handled its themes. Mary Chois experiences and takes on being Korean American are so engrained in the characters which really stands out to me in comparison to other books I have read with protagonist that are from a minority group.
The themes came together so beautifully and so brutally,
My only issue with the book is that I never fully felt like I understood the characters despite the book being so character driven. 4.5 stars

I didn't think I could love one of Choi's books more than I loved Emergency Contact, but Yolk is absolutely my new favorite. It's so beautiful, so raw, so honest. I felt so much familiarity with this story. Moving to New York, the self-destruction, the self-hatred, the poor decisions, the loneliness. I felt the story in my gut.
I can't recommend this book enough. I read it in two sittings. I can't wait to read it again.

Once you get over the first 20% of the book in which the protagonist is unlikeable (but you know it's for a reason) and you get to the WHY, it's compelling. Once her sister is more in the story, the book is much smoother
