I like when I was listening to how it was for June and Jane growing up but then after I kept going in and out a lot with this. Wasn’t my favorite but at the end was where I was like damn family hits
Very nice; it was not as depressing than I initially thought from the synopsis. :)
This was a good story with a few hard hitting topics. I think the reason for me it isn't a 5 star read is because the end wasn't what I imagined. I understand the ending as it is but I expected more. Jayne and June both have valuable lessons to teach not only each other but to themselves and they are both really heavy. The way the author added the perfect amount of humor is phenomenal. I recommend this to anyone who wants a well written sister banter, heavy topics in a not so painful way, and sprinkles of self love.
very slow-paced read, which is not my favorite but it was worth the read.
I picked this up thinking I would be moved as I love my sister very much. However, all I found was ungrateful and very selfish characters. Drama happens just for there to be dramatic moments.
*nervous coughing* i think this book is a tad bit overhyped. *nervous coughing intensifies*

Honestly? This is so raw and hurts in the best way. The writing is funny, it’s still so emotional and doesn’t make light of the plots. It’s the perfect balance of real, but raw and authentic while also entertaining. Mary simply is a genius I fear so now I need to read all of her stuff
This book hit me so much harder than I thought it would. I was immediately irritated by Jayne and the selfishness and the pretentiousness and while it’s explained and she’s developed as a fully complex person all the characters are still largely unlikeable. It didn’t mean that I wasn’t rooting for them but I was definitely hate reading at some parts. Honestly that’s probably what makes the book so good. Also the way she captures the Asian American experience and the immigrant experience is incredible. I sob/ugly cried through the last chapters. The dipping a toe into recovery and family aspect was so emotional. A 4.5 for sure.
I absolutely LOVED this book! It’s the perfect read for any college aged student, or older, who’s a little lost and has too many thoughts rummaging around in their heads. Mary H.K. Choi writes these characters as if they’re people you can pass on the street. They and their experiences feels so real, even if they’ve got problems you can’t personally relate to. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to find themselves not knowing how the ending is going to turn out!
