This book is hilarious and tragic and moving and brilliant. As the author states in the content warning, it can definitely be “emotionally expensive” to take in this content at times- Not only with the dynamics of Jayne’s eating disorder, but also with broken family dynamics, and a broken young woman who is trying desperately to put herself back together. At the same time, she is also so vehemently focused on self-destruction. This story and these characters are powerful and layered and led to a lot of self-reflection. The writing itself was so beautiful and I want some lines forever tattooed in my brain. It’s to the point also incredibly deep and poetic all at once. I loved it. It’s a very character heavy story. Not so much plot as just living and vibes but done so well. Part of me read this book so slow because I wanted to process it slowly and just didn’t want it to end. Jayne and June are both the best and the worst. Their love is unconditional and unrelenting yet displayed with so many flaws it is so remarkably human. I’m excited to revisit this book again in the future and see how it resonates at different phases of life.

Yolk cuts into your first generation Asian American soul unapologetically and vindicates your experience at the same time. It makes you want to forgive your family, hold them close, and curse them in the same breath.
fast-paced

slow beginning and took some time to get used to the very descriptive writing style. but towards the middle it got SO GOOD! the plot is so rich and raw and vulnerable and beyond sad :( you really feel for the characters and the struggles they go through. sister love 4ever. also Patrick is my mans mwah

Heartbreaking. Who allowed this? I don't usually read realistic fiction but this was an exception. I've lost two people to cancer and this hit close to home, specifically with the reaction of Jayne. Feeling helpless no matter how much you want to help.
