Well....that was traumatic. After finishing this short story, I then made the mistake of googling it and discovered the short film on YouTube that was made in 1969. It follows the story exactly, word for word.

The sense of impending doom is really well done, right from the beginning. I knew something bad was going to come from the Lottery, and it was every bit as terrible as I expected. Especially considering it could happen to anyone...men, women, and even the children.

While I can believe this was required reading in middle schools back in the day, what I can't believe is that students were also made to watch the short film afterward. That seems like unnecessary cruelty.

Some of the stories were great. I particularly liked The Daemon Lover, the Witch, and the Lottery. I probably would've enjoyed some of the other stories more if I had studied them in a class, but when I'm reading for pleasure I really don't want to have to overanalyze things.

A strange collection of short stories. Some good, some just really weird. Ones that stood out were My Life With R.H. Macy, Charlie and the best one The Lottery.
