Alright...now besides my own personal opinions...it's a good read. If you're reading it to feel 'involved' or to 'understand' the true magnitude of the conflicts in this book...then I'd suggest you'd be better off reading actual accounts. If you're like me and you just want to read it to check on various factors like the plot, the idea and the vision behind it or how a story is told...then I would be wrong to say that this wasn't doing a decent job at it.
As a novel...it's great. It tells the story in a very unassuming fashion and then blindsides you with a plot twist. It is definitely a very interesting read and will have you focusing harder than you might even realize. I appreciate the way it vessels up a lot of things and how it acted as a pioneer in terms of putting Asian literature on the mainstream after a substantial gap in time. The characters are pretty refined...not rushed and the author makes it quite easy to visualize them and their tendencies if you view them from a third person's perspective...emphasis on the phrase 'third person' as it's hard to emphasize with them in any capacity...which isn't a bad thing or anything...just my general observation.
The narration itself is pretty close to flawless. The contrast between two different worlds is portrayed with great exaggeration to of course, make the reader feel like they're 'out of touch with the true reality of the world'. It's not innovative...but we'll executed to the point anyone can pick it up and me instantly hooked to it.
The vast over the top hyperbolization of a very serious conflict and summarizing it within a plain writing does not really show any character whatsoever. If anything, this is just taking a global issue and trying to profit off from it.
If you want a safe bet to read...this is your go to. It won't disappoint...unless your opinions are highly political and instead on focusing on the story you decide to understand why this book can be interpreted as a 'cash grab' in the real world.
