I didn't like this quite as much as Sugar Daddy, which had a unique and interesting premise. While this one was strong through the first third (and also terrifying) I thought it was a bit unfeeling through the later parts. It would have been nice to find out a little more about Hardy as a person, who I was so fond of in Sugar Daddy. However I still enjoy Lisa Kleypas's writing style so I may continue the series and try some of her others.

This is a very good novel. However, it needed a content warning for rape and domestic abuse.

Note: Covers physical and emotional abuse in a marriage.

Wow, this book surprised me and it put me on an emotional roller coaster. I had to stay up till 3 AM to make sure that Haven escaped her abusive relationship. And I cried when she did! Kleypas did a really good job of portraying trauma and the healing process and the hurtles that come after it.

3.5 stars! ... Maybe 4 stars!

Okay well this book was sooooo much more better than the first one. Like SOOO much more better. I was honestly not going to continue the series because of how awful the first one was. It sucks that Liberty and Gage's story was just to set up the rest of the books.
I'm so happy I didn't stop because then I wouldn't have uncovered Haven and Hardy. They were a beautiful pair.
I found that the beginning was so hard to read.. The abuse Haven suffered from Nick was horrifying. I swear I almost cried for her. I wanted to reach in and save her.
I loved Hardy... Like a lot. But I felt like because it's only told on her perspective we don't get much of his personality and that sucks.. I wish we knew more of the male leads.. Why couldn't Ms. Kleypas alternate POVs?

Just like the whole Travis trilogy, with all the romance, love and the inevitable and really well-written juicy stuff, there is a serious theme going on in the story. This one addresses the issues of narcissistic personality disorder and abusive relationships. It is obvious that Ms. Kleypas did an extensive research on the subject (both sides - the abuser and the victim) and her writing is so gripping that I felt anxious reading the scenes with abuse. But the romance part manages to lighten up the atmosphere of the story and you find yourself believing in a possiblity of a happy ending for people who went through some kind of hardship. There is a quote in the book that sums up the whole situation perfectly:
"I have come to realize you can never be truly happy unless you've known some sorrow."
I do believe this to be entirely true. :)
