A huge thank you to NetGalley and Inkyard Press for the digital ARC of 'The Scarlet Alchemist' by Kylie Lee Baker.

I am a sucker for Historical Fiction, which is one of the reasons I was drawn to this book to begin with. After reading I definitely want to learn more about the actual time period and dynasty this was based on.
I've also always been fascinated with learning about early alchemy, and the mystical twist with alchemy was a fantastic, and enjoyable concept.

Following the intrigue in the Royal Court with Zilan was a ride. I loved following the progression of the relationship with her cousins, as well as the Prince... which is why I am already eagerly awaiting book 2 due to that cliffhanger we were left with.

This is definitely something that would appeal to both those that enjoy Historical Fiction, and those that enjoy Fantasy. I can see my students reading something like this.

I surprisingly enjoyed this book! It's set in an alternate Tang dynasty, and I appreciate how it draws inspiration from real historical figures. The author's dedication to thorough research impressed me a bit— I especially loved reading her little historical notes at the end!

This dark fantasy book leads to some intense and gory scenes, so it might not be suitable for those who are sensitive to violence and a lot of blood. It digs into various societal themes such as wealth disparity, discrimination, prejudice, corruption, greed, and the importance of family. It charms the readers with its relatable main character, Zilan, who faces discrimination and embodies both determination and vulnerability. Despite having some plot armor as the protagonist, Zilan still encounters many challenges and sacrifices.

If you appreciate an intelligent protagonist who is determined to achieve anything she sets her mind to, I highly recommend "The Alchemist." The author's writing is amazing and I appreciate her taking the time to research into the Tang Dynasty (Wu Zetian). I can’t wait for the second book!

I don't think this book was bad per se, but I was probably not the target audience. I would have preferred more character development, and I wasn't a big fan of the gore.

I should've expected that going in, given that the book, deals with necromancy, but I got the book as a subscription box and enjoy cultivation novels, so I didn't look closely enough before reading.

No star rating because I don't feel like my opinion would be a fair ranking.

Overall really enjoyed the story it’s very unique and fast paced! The relationship aspect was extremely YA to me and again waaaay too fast paced, i feel like there wasn’t enough build up of connection. Brutal scenes throughout the story, a lot of things i wasn’t expecting so that’s a plus! If you enjoy a story with multiple plot twists i recommend!

Kylie Lee Baker is officially a must-read author for me. After three books read from her, if her name is on the cover then it shall be in my hand soon. Everything I loved about the Night duology is here but in a new form. A fascinating magic system based in alchemy and raising people from the dead, a vivid Asian setting based on Chinese history, and a main character who doesn't quite fit in anywhere but makes sure she carves out a space just for herself anyway. Literally have nothing bad to say about this book and I cannot wait for the sequel!
