The last book in the series ended on a terrible note, Casteel is taken hostage in exchange for Poppy’s freedom. The newest installment, War of the Two Queens, picks up about a month after the events of book two as Poppy and Kieran are in the throes of planning to get Casteel back. The book is tense the entire time, and the dramatic irony is almost frustrating. We know key pieces of information the characters take a long time to figure out. It makes the book feel very long and slow paced. The shining virtue of this book is the relationships between Poppy, Casteel, and Kieran. We also get very strong Casteel chapters from his point of view and those really helped round out the narrative. Now I can’t wait for book 2 in the companion series to find out more about that storyline.

I will say this book sort of exhausted me because the world is so rich. I couldn’t keep all the terms straight from the companion series, a shadow in the ember, and I think it detracted from the reading experience. The publisher should include a glossary and possibly a timeline.

I started the first 5 chapters and decided to wait until the weekend to read, and when I did, I devoured the rest of the book in approximately 24 hours. I could NOT put it down. This is one that hooks with with unbearable angst from the beginning and doesn't let go until the end; however, after

Casteel is rescued, things definitely get more lighthearted and funny in ways similar to the previous books.</spoiler)

Also, I won't lie, I was apprehensive about the Joining, but it was done SO WELL, and dear lord, I love the love between the three of them and the way Cas and Kieran both worship Poppy.

A phenomenal installment to this series. My heart was racing at the end and I literally had to put my book down every few minutes to take a deep breath. 

I need the next two books STAT.
