Not your typical memoir in that it follows a family who enjoy wealth and luxury, as nouveau-riche who profited from the discovery of oil fields in Azerbaijan. But set against the backdrop of the cultural and political upheaval of the early twentieth-century in the Caucasus (and Baku particularly) this was a fascinating and well written read. There is an eccentric cast of characters through the extended family, vivid and absorbing descriptions and tales that are in turn endearing, comic and even romantic.

It drew me in, I cared about the characters, it did what you always hope a book will - it made me desperate to know how everything would turn out, but I never wanted it to end.
