4.75 stars.

I loved this beautiful, harrowing odyssey of childhood friendship. Fredrik Backman never ever disappoints, truly. His writing is so beautifully empathetic and human. I adore the characters in this book and cried like 15 times while reading it. It takes a really gifted author to continuously write such powerful, graceful and sensitive stories again and again.

In true Backman fashion: this book is about more than one thing. It's about art and empathy and friendship and belief and love.

The only reason I'm not giving it a full five stars is because I did find Louisa a tad annoying about halfway through the book and I also felt like it could've been a bit shorter, but I loved this book and didn't even hesitate a second to buy a copy when it was picked for our bookclub. Definitely one of my top reads of the year.

This was not my favorite Fredrick Backman book but it was still so good. Much slower than some of his others, but deeply full of meaning and emotion.

How can a book with so many words say so little? Page 135 and there's still nothing happening!

By the way, they're fourteen. It's the summer they turned fourteen. Everyone is fourteen. Did I mention they're fourteen? Did you forget in the last two pages? They're fourteen!!!

Also not a single person in this book acts their age.

Also also, 39 is not that old, why is he acting like he's in his 80s? And why does the 18 year old act like a toddler?

I just can't. When a book feels like a chore, it's time to DNF.

Some parts of this i liked. I liked how it was wholesome but the humour of this book made me cringe. The style it was written in just wasnt my favourite. The dialogue and stories felt unrealistic and like it was trying to be very quirky. I understand why my mom liked this and recommended it to me cause the story is interesting but the style just wasnt my fav.

I loved the characters and the story, it was so perfect. I just think it was a teensy bit too long, but otherwise loved.

I am not okay after finishing this book. Protect all the characters at all costs 💔
