Both sad and beautiful. I cried so hard through the end that my husband asked if I was okay. This is a lovely book.
So many good quotes:
* "Being a parent is so strange, all our children's pain belongs to us, but so does their joy."
* "He used to tease Ted by saying that he "hated adventures," but of course that isn't true. Ted loves adventures, he just absolutely doesn't want to participate in them. He wants to be one of the people in the houses, reading about adventures in a book, like a normal person."
* "Adults never understand that for a child who uses drawing to escape from reality, being made to do it on command is unbearable."
* "It suits you, that laugh. I'm glad they didn't manage to take it from you."
"Who?"
"All the people who have tried."
* "Ted and Ted's brain are not friends, they're classmates, forced to do a group assignment called "life" together. And it's not going great."
* "Some people have those sorts of hands, as if all living things instinctively know when they are being touched by someone who would never do them harm."
* "Maybe it's hurt inside?" Ted said sadly.
"It's probably just frightened!" Joar said.
"That's the same thing," Ted pointed out softly.
* "There's an author called Donna Tartt who describes why a person falls in love with art: 'It's a secret whisper from an alleyway. Psst, you. Hey kid. Yes, you.' That's what libraries feel like for me."
* "The world is full of miracles, but none greater than how far a young person can be carried by someone else's belief in them."
* "It's a funny thing. The person we fall in love with, we hardly ever call by their name. Because it's somehow just so obvious that it's you I'm talking to, that it's you I'm always thinking of. Who else?"
