Too many dumb, generic romcom secrets. Such a great author, but I can only handle so many “oh my gosh, I can’t possibly tell blah blah blah about blah blah” before I end up skipping chapters. It’s one thing if someone’s afraid to tell someone how they feel but the whole keeping secrets and have it all blow up at the end is such a stupid plot point

Maybe it’s also the narration but Iman not the biggest fan of the mc. Maybe I will still finish this one day.

I hated the characterizations. The MCs were actually really unlikeable all-around and the awkward situations felt contrived—even drunk, who puts ?raw? shrimp into their purse and then eats it in a bathroom later? That’s a bridge too far into “disaster” for me—especially when that character is also written to be highly motivated and responsible. Lizzie stuck out horribly to me as a character with major inconsistencies—she felt like she could not be real, because she was all over the place, and not in a good way.

Cara is strangely obsessed with setting other people up for love after she calls off her wedding. Apparently… this is just something she does often and has been a problem before? I stopped reading this novel a month ago, so nitpicking her whole personality isn’t something I’ll do but genuinely—she annoyed me too.

Side-character James—Lizzie’s bestie, Cara’s brother. Never finished the novel to find out—but he only ever seemed selfish and like a terrible friend and somehow Lizzie never saw this sort of behavior as manipulative rather than “hapless puppy”. I hope by the end she opened her eyes and called him out on being a pretty awful person.

It’s pretty rare for me to not finish a novel but this one was such a struggle—I even forgot I hadn’t finished it because it was forgettable.

This is 100% my fault. I have a history of hating her main characters. BUT. I didn't hate Lizzie initially and I let that lull me into a false sense of security. Lizzie makes bad choices, James makes bad choices, Cara makes bad choices, they all deliberately keep making the worst possible choices in like every situation. The whole blow up was just too much. Weirdly I think there weren't enough apologies and those made were about the wrong things. I cleary just don't click with these kinds of books and that is on me.
