The screenplay is much better than the film. Macabre, funny, thought-provoking, deep.

This screen play is a mixed bag. On one hand it is very successful in depicting the instability and brutality in the drug trafficking business, a harsh world with many victims. Other parts of the screen play aren't nearly as successful. He struggles with women in this screenplay, falling back on the tried tropes of the virgin (Laura, not a virgin, but "pure"), and the whore -- the hypersexualized Malkina, whose name even holds sexual connotations. The women are static, flat, and boring, and all of Malkina's parading around with two pet cheetahs can't change that. Saying as how the women play important roles, especially Malkina, the screenplay would have been greatly improved by making them more than simply caricatures.
