A beautifully sad story about a good and courageous young boy escaping a cruel existence to finally by chance, discover who he is and know happiness.

Pulled a featureless hardback copy of this off the shelf of the middle school library in the 7th grade. I have no idea what attracted me to the book. I'm also not sure that I really knew what the Holocaust was back then. Regardless, this little novel affected me profoundly. To this day (some 25 years later) I recall with fair clarity half a dozen scenes from the novel.

Here is one of those books you are suppose to say you've read, but why waste your time? When reading becomes a chore it is not literature. No wonder kids don't like reading! Really how truly uninteresting. The ending was uninspiring.

Read this book in just a few hours. I really liked David, and I was so sad about how his life had been spent up to age 12. Just an amazing tale of survival and happy endings. Of course most stories regarding the Holocaust are not happy endings, but this one has one. It is fictional though. I highly recommend it!

This was one of my favorite books. So much so that I still have it 45 years later.
