It's amazing how this book starts as a rich, ponderous mystery but turns into an intense thriller by the end. The 'thick' writing was difficult to get through at first, but by some sorcery it became as easy to read as anything else by the halfway mark.
The story's good, too.
Very highly recommended, particularly as a place to see if you want to read Wurts' other, larger, works.

Typical of Janny, it is excellently written, deliberately plotted, with an electrifying climax. I particularly enjoy her penchant for writing characters that bear their sufferings with grace and endurance, who sacrifice their own desires for the good of others, who understand that we are called to higher standards than those of our societies. A wonderfully inventive magic system. Loved it.
Fntastisch boek, absolute aanrader voor iedereen die high fantasy wil maar dan geen serie van 15 boeken. Ik begon eigenlijk met wat tegenzin aan dit boek, heb het voor 1,50 op een boekenfestijn gekocht en nadat ik eigenlijk niet door deel 1 van de Wars of Light and Shadow heen kwam dacht ik dat dit ook niet zo veel soeps zou zijn. Het verhaal houdt je van begin tot einde vast en aan het einde mis je de personages echt.
Vernieuwend aan dit verhaal is dat magie niet alleen maar leuk en fijn is. De gruwelijkere kanten van een samenleving met magie en wat er gebeurt als je gaat oorlogvoeren met magie worden belicht zonder te vervallen in een belerend pacifistisch geheel. Het is gewoon een steengoed verhaal dat een hoekje van de high fantasy onderzoekt dat nog niet zo vaak beschreven is.
Minpuntjes zijn eigenlijk inherent aan een enorm verhaal met backstory in 1 boek stoppen: soms heb je wel een beetje suspension of disbelief nodig en het einde komt voor je gevoel iets te vroeg. Het is niet afgeraffeld, juist erg netjes afgewerkt maar toch gun je de personages een waardige afsluiting. Of toch een tweede deel...

not sure about 3 or 4 stars, at times it was beautiful and you can't really start the book and put it down but then sometimes there was too much detail, too much description...though now that I look back I'm going to make it a 4 star, since it was 4 stars most of the time and beautiful all of the time
Wow, what an amazing surprise. This stand alone fantasy novel grabs the reader and won't let go. It has a vibrant cast of characters, just large enough to fill in the fantastic plot without bogging one down in names. Each has their own motivations and personality, turning into a fully developed person by the end of the book. Furthermore, the pacing of the book is incredible fast. Though the page count was high, I read almost all of it in a single sitting and did not regret it. The author writes with a language style that is both textured and clear, whether she is describing political intrigue or a harried horseback ride.
