While snowed in at a rest stop, a woman sees a child’s handprint on a van window and upon further inspection realises there might be a child trafficker among the friendly faces trapped with her.

I really enjoyed this. While I was initially mildly upset that the twists were clunky and easy to foresee, the last fifth of the book really surprised and intrigued me and the plot was gripping.

On the whole I highly recommend, especially if you enjoy tense thrillers with relatable leads. Darby Thorne, you have my whole heart.

 *exhales* Ok, let’s unpack.

Wow, this was gory. I am a thriller reader and this was… a lot. I became squeamish often and had to put the book down a few times to just take a break.

I loved the fast pace of the plot and I read this fairly quickly. It definitely had some really great shocking moments throughout which was nice as opposed to one big plot twist in the last 10% of the book.

I was confused for the first half of the book because it felt like everything had already happened so early on and I didn’t know what else could be coming (there was more so that’s good but it was an interesting story design). This was a book centered around the main character making dumb mistakes. Some of those plot points hit and some were a miss for me. Let’s just say that Darby has the WORST luck. Ever.

One more small thing that was just a little cumbersome was one of the main male characters was named Ashley and another female character was named Jay and it just threw me off sometimes. I know they are androgynous names but it was just a small issue of mine.

Overall, this book kept me reading, had multiple shocking moments, and was a great read!

I was really hoping to like this book, after I heard it mentioned positively so many times, and I generally enjoy isolation thrillers.
Unfortunately, this one didn't do it for me.
At first it was a quick read, so I wanted to finished it, and I did, but it started to drag sometime after the half-way point and I found myself skim reading some passages.
  • I found the plot beats entirely predictable and not even well executed.
  • During the whole book I failed to get a grip on the spacial and temporal descriptions. At least once per scene I was completely disoriented as to where everyone and everything was or how they moved around. I had no concept of the distances since sometimes a movement was described in such details that it took pages, and I thought it must have taken minutes, when it seem the author wanted to convey seconds. I found myself wondering: Is this urgent? Is this slow? Are the sixty seconds mentioned over yet? Are they far from each other? I never knew. (I'm not a native English speaker, so take this with a grain of salt, but I've almost exclusively read English novels for the last 20 years, and this is not a problem that I usually encounter.)
  • The characters are clichéd, stereotypical and two dimensional. Unfortunately, don't have anything else to say about them.
  • The point of view seemed inconsistent to me: Most of the time it was clearly third person limited, but sometimes, especially in Darby's perspective, as the main character, facts were used she couldn't know or things described she couldn't possible see
  • When the point of view shifted, which was so rare that it always felt jarring, the writing style didn't shift with it, so the other characters third person limited sounded just as Darby, which for me was even more jarring (this can be considered nit-picky, but the fact that this took me out of the story this noticibly, to me speaks for itself)
  • I might have respected the book a little bit more if it had had the guts to actually kill off Darcy in the end, instead of the very transparent fake-out in the last chapter

This book grabs you from the beginning and you can't stop reading it. Its full of twists and turns. Even know the plot is fairly interesting it just wasn't my favorite book. I did love Darby. She was so determined to save Jay and you just kept rooting for them. I was very happy with the ending.

 OH MY GOSHHHHHH

My first thriller could not have been a better pick I think! Must have been fate because I checked this out at the library on a whim because I thought "hey I've seen that title before and I'm pretty sure I remember vaguely positive reviews??" HOT DAMN

I finished this in one day because I could not stop reading! It's so fast paced and the tension is always there seeing as it takes place over a short period of time. The main character Darby is also just excellent. I was really able to connect with her (aside from the fact that we both drive ancient honda civics that we named) and she didn't make dumb/unrealistic decisions like I was worried. Also, if you want a thriller where the lead just gets progressively more feral, here you go.

Good thing to note is that this isn't as much of a mystery as the synopsis suggests. So just go in knowing that it's more of a survival thriller than a mystery thriller, though it still has plenty of twists and turns.

Even though I'm giving this 5 stars, I'll admit it's not perfect, but a lot of that is probably personal preference. Like I think the ending could have been a tad less drawn out, and there's at least one plot hole that luckily wasn't major enough to ruin anything but still annoyed me lol. The author also uses the word mushy way too much :/ But at least it had a satisfying ending which is more than I expected on my first thriller adventure.
