It opens with an eerie post-apocalyptic world after a pandemic. So eerie in fact, I had to put this book away for awhile because it felt a little “too soon” in the era of c*vid. But I picked the book back up recently, and found that this isn’t a thriller or scary book at all, but a deeply important story (stories, actually) about the human condition, and what truly matters at the end of everything.
I cried more than once in the final 1/3 of the book.
A couple poignant parts that linger with me
- the fate of the people on the Air Gradia jet
- the man who tells Clark the last phone call he ever made - before you couldn’t making calls anymore - was to his boss, instead of to his family
Oof.

4.5 stars. I've always been a fan of quiet apocalyptic novels, stories where people try to rebuild and get on with their lives despite insurmountable odds. Definitely more hopeful than something like The Road, and I really appreciated it ❤️
