Excellent premise - the author putting himself in a fictional murder story, even in the acknowledgments. A few unexpected twists and turns, and the ones I thought would happen never did, which was great! Definitely recommend.

It was a slow start and throughout the book it felt like Horowitz was self promoting. At first it was exciting to realize he was talking about himself, referencing books I had read before, but it soon became too much. It felt like every chapter he mentioned one of his works, and it didn’t add to the plot in any meaningful way. I didn’t get fully hooked on the storyline until halfway in, partially because of this.

Maybe the real character development was the friends we made along the way

A solid homage to Holmes and Watson, especially if Holmes had been a manipulative prick.

Did you know Anthony Horowitz wrote the Alex Rider series?

A simple self-insert Sherlock Holmes fanfic (did you know Anthony Horowitz wrote the Alex Rider series?) with an unlikeable, homophobic detective at the head (did you know Anthony wrote the Alex Rider series though?) that was played to be mysterious and brilliant but just came across as a typical dickhead. I don't know why Horowitz's self insert simped over him so hard.

Anthony Horowitz wrote the Alex Rider series.

I also get the feeling that Horowitz doesn't like women. At least, he definitely doesn't like them in this book as they are all written with degradation, the descriptions focussing primarily on their flaws and they are treated (he did, though, he wrote Alex Rider) with almost eye rolling frustration at the mere fact they existed around the men.

This is a book. I can say that. And I won't be reading the Alex Rider series that Anthony mentioned he'd written at least 8 times in the book (that I counted).

Fun, almost a cosy mystery but a lot more gruesome. Curious to see where this grumpy-sunshine duo goes from here.
