A good, solid mystery. I enjoyed how Horowitz made it feel autobiographical, to the point where I had to google what actually happened in real life (basically nothing). Using yourself as a main character in a fictional novel was interesting to me, especially with how he handled the moral dilemmas in the story (ie, when he discovered that Hawthorn was homophobic) - when you're the main character, I would imagine it means more, what comes out of that character's mouth and how he represents you in the story.

I liked the mystery overall - It was cleverly done. However, I don't think I'll be continuing to read these stories, mainly because Hawthorne is pretty damn unlikeable. The homophobia is a real bummer - I feel like Horowitz could have made him difficult to deal with in a way that was...easier to deal with haha.

Anthony Horowitz, a YA novel and screen writer, delves into a new genre by writing a detective novel with Hawthorne, a crime consultant. Hawthorne proposes that Horowitz can document his process and write a novel and they can split the proceeds 50/50. While mostly fiction this book includes enough facts about Horowitz that it leaves you wondering, did this really happen in real life?
Fun modern twist to the Holmes/Watson relationship. Moves steadily while still leaving you guessing at the end.
Wish we knew more about Hawthorne. More incentive to keep reading the series.

A wonderful take on the classic Sherlock and Watson relationship. You have your somewhat unlikable Sherlock paired with a relatable Watson character who isn’t necessarily a super lovable person meant to write a book about their “adventures”. Clues are thoughtfully mixed into the story and don’t stick out like a sore thumb. I felt genuinely surprised by the ending in this who-done-it and was excited to read the next book in the series.
