Had no idea what to expect going into this. Really enjoyed the mix of chatacters their inner conflict, personal journeys amid a harsh world were so great to follow. Moments of frustrations with each character and seeing them come out tje other side. There are alot of teenage hormones, but I found the chatacters and plot compelling I could brush past the excess. But all the complicated relationships I enjoyed and found the characters realistic, relatable and empathetic, despite the brutality around them.

This is a good book for lovers of this type of fantasy, in part because the tropes and characters of this story are surprising. There were so many things that I thought would happen that went in a completely different direction than I expected. I’m a sucker for a dual POV novel and I thought this handled it in a fun and exciting manner.
I would consider this in the same genre as the Dance of Thieves duology, because it has similar espionage-y, will-they-won’t-they energy at very high stakes.

It's a grisly world we are introduced to in this book. There is a lot of violence coming off these pages, that at times feel over excessive.

Once I got to listen to the audiobook, I made it fairly quickly through this book.

What I struggled with  throughout the story, is the female main character's motivation. She wants to save her brother at all costs, even though she never ever gets even the slightest proof that he is still alive. This is just not good enough when I look at all the pain and trauma she goes through in this book in order to save her brother. At times she feels like a completely naive character who has not a clue how harsh the world is until she is thrown into it, and yet she seems to be intelligent. And these two things just do not add up for me.
