Truly enjoyed…

Chee’s adventures in LALA land, even if was a bit further east of LA. Bernie’s adventures were a little more disconcerting, saving an old man, trying to figure out why someone would want to steal dirt, and trying to take care of her mother. Maybe next time Bernie and Chee can take that vacation.

Okay.
I'm hooked. Anne will have a continual revenue stream.
She is a little more relational than Tony, but she does deliver an excellent multi-faceted mystery.
I liked it. I cried. It was mysterious.

This review is based on the FirstReads uncorrected proof that my Mom won and loaned to me after she finished it. The second book written by Anne Hillerman in the series started by her father, Tony, was terrific. In this edition, two cases are featured -- one in Shiprock and one in Monument Valley. Officer Bernie Manuelito and Sergeant Jim Chee find themselves working on different cases when their much-deserved vacation is cut short. While Chee follows a series of cryptic clues that lead to a missing woman and a mysterious mound of dirt and rocks that could be a grave site in Monument Valley, Bernie is in Shiprock dealing with the fallout from a drug bust gone wrong, a mysterious fire, a solar polar initiative, and family-related issues. Both enlist the help of their mentor, retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, and find new ways to learn from his expertise. Reading the series is like reconnecting with old friends and I love the fact that Bernie plays a more prominent role and gets to prove herself as a member of the Navajo police force. Ms. Hillerman has done a phenomenal job of staying true to the original characters while leaving her own imprint on the series, and I look forward to continuing to read more books featuring them all. The sense of place and infusion of issues facing the Navajo community are also prevalent, and two aspects of the series that keep me coming back again and again. Both cases in the book were equally interesting and illustrated where each police officer was in their careers. I am eager to see how this series continues to evolve based on reading this one and its predecessor, [b:Spider Woman's Daughter|23562844|Spider Woman's Daughter|Anne Hillerman|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1416006286s/23562844.jpg|24090377]. I would recommend reading these two books of the series in order, as there is a significant plot element that carries over and will likely continue to be a factor based on how things were left in this installment.

Anne Hillerman has taken up the staff on the Navajo Mysteries series after her husband passed. Obviously two people aren't going to have the same perspective, even if they are writing about the same main characters. While I really enjoyed Tony's books in this series, I also appreciate Anne's different take on the characters, especially the female characters. I don't want to spoil it so I won't say much more, but if you enjoyed the original books in this series, you will certainly enjoy both Rock with Wings and also Spider Woman (published first).

I still love all the characters, though I wish Chee and Manuelito weren't so teenager-ish.

I read this book for a cultural awareness project. For that purpose it was excellent. As a book to simply sit back and enjoy there were some major issues. I think the biggest reason that I did not rate it higher was because it lacked transitions. I could be reading a dialogue between two characters and then in the next paragraph the dialogue has shifted to be a whole day later and two completely different characters with no indication. Many times I was re reading passages to figure out when the whole scene and setting had changed and the text gave little indication. This may seem nit picky but it made the novel very difficult to read.
The other issue I had with this novel was with the mysteries themselves. The two main case investigations did not feel cohesive. In the end it felt like the result came out of left field. Not as a twist but as if I was reading an early draft that was hurried to be finished.
I did learn a lot about this author's interpretation of Navajo culture. It felt balanced and was intriguing. I'm hesitant to say that from reading one novel by an author who I am not sure is part of the community is enough to make generalizations of a culture, but I did enjoy those elements of the novel.
