Overall, I liked this book but the pacing and timeline really threw me off. A simple before and after would have been better but all the "one year before the before" stuff was confusing, especially when we find out
that Monday had been dead for two years and Claudia's trauma prevented her from remembering.

dark emotional mysterious tense
ok i cannot rate this bc i read the book timeline wrong GJFDHJGSKGFHKSDJFHJKS thats a me issue but its pretty well written. the story keeps you wanting to continue it and everything is foreshadowed really well. please check trigger warnings if you feel you need it this is not a light story. super super emotional i think the author's really good at writing i just feel like i didn't gel with the plot as much bc of the darkness of it which is a me problem not a book problem.
ok spoiler i am not a massive fan of the mental break plot twist it just feels kind of. overdone?? to me but it was forshadowed well so i'm not nearly as annoyed as i mightve been and also i feel sick after reading that. also feel so angry at so many of the adults and im assuming thats intentional because this is very much a story about adults who leave kids to do the heavy lifting and i am so angry hJKFDSYAJHKFGDSHJA

It is very confusing at first, but keep with it!

The reveal of what happened to Monday is one of the most intense buildups I’ve ever read

A solid story of a middle school girl coming of age without her best friend. The flow of the narrative can be a bit confusing sometimes, especially after the final reveal, but it's nothing that a second reading couldn't fix. Jackson does a great job building the setting and introducting us to the cast of characters making them feel fleshed out and whole; I would love to eat some of Claudia's mom's cooking. My only complaint, which is a huge spoiler,
is how quickly the narrative glossed over poor August even though he went missing first.

I found this on a list of commonly banned books so I thought I'd take a moment to address appropriateness for school-age readers: it's a challenging read with dark themes, several sexual references, and a little underage partying shenanigans; it's a fine read for a mature high schooler, and matches in content to other books I read safely at that age.

Wow. Read through the night. Couldn’t put it down. Have taken out all the author’s other books from the library. Horrible story that needed to be told with the bravest child at the center of it all. This is a book  that can change you, if that’s something you’re willing to allow.

Well, that was not at all what I expected! This is not my favorite book by Jackson, mostly because of the back and forth time structure that was somewhat difficult to follow. I think the plot was shocking, revolting, and honest and the characters were gritty and real. This story would be a good read for hesitant teen readers because of its’ short chapters and engaging content.
