i initially gave this two stars but after re-reading (and having a way better taste in books) i decided to bump it up to 4 stars. i think i only gave it two stars because at the time i thought the structure of the book was confusing, and i thought some of the characters were pretty flawed and messed up, not realizing that was the entire point. this is the second book i’ve read of tiffany d jackson’s books so far but it seems as though she purposefully makes her characters flawed so that they seem like real people and not just simply characters from a book, which i like. this book touched on the unfortunate fact that black girls often go ignored and unacknowledged until it’s far too late, which i found it did beautifully, and by the end of the book i was basically ugly crying. definitely an amazing book that discusses such a harrowing topic, an absolute must read imo. though like i said, the structure of the book can be sometimes confusing, atleast it was for me, but for this type of book it absolutely works, and as you read along it gets a little less confusing, but like i said maybe that’s just a me problem.

This was dark and harrowing and, at times, absolutely heart-breaking, but such a powerful book and one I raced through because I had to know how it was going to end.
